TEN INCHES OF RAIN [十英寸降雨] 語法上,一句的 subject 和 verb 必需有所謂 agreement。 舉例說:he 和 is、I 和 am、she 和 was 是相配 的,但 they 和 is、I 和 are、she 和 were(除非是假設語氣)則是不相配的。 看清楚,這原來是個「數」的問題。 先決定了名詞 的「數」(number),才可選用 is、am、are、has、have 等動詞。 He 與 they,a person 與 many people, a car 與 cars,分別明顯。 只要小心,選擇動詞不難,然而,有些 subjects 是頗難斷定是 singular 或 plural 的,即如:fifty feet, ten years,fifty thousand dollars,ten inches of rain。 只看字面,上述的四個例都是複數:fifty fee 對 one foot,ten years 對 one year, fifty thousand dollars 對 one dollar,ten inches 對 one inch。 不過,一放進句子裏,這些片語的 number 便會因整句的意念而產生變化。 |
| 1. |
Fifty feet is not too longs。 |
| 2. |
Ten years is a long time。 |
| 3. |
Fifty thousand dollars is a lot of money。 |
這三句中的動詞都是 is,絕不可用 are。原因是,我們想着的「五十呎」是 a distance,「十年」是 a period of timc,「五萬元」是 a sum of money。就憑這「想着的意念」,三個 subjects 都算單數。 事實上,若不嫌累贅,我們可以這樣說:a distance of fifty feet is,a period of ten years is,a sum of fifty thousand dollars is 。 Ten inches of rain 又如何呢? 先把它放進例句:Ten inches of rain were recorded。 Inches 是複數,rain 是單數,但 inches of rain 以 inches 為主,而且紀錄上的是尺寸而不是雨,所以動詞用 were。 |
THEIR FEET The police 是複數名,這是毫無異議的。例句: |
| 1. |
The police are armed。 |
| 2. |
The police have been alerted。 |
英美對 department 一字的意見不同。英國人承認這字是單數,但又可以當作複數。美國人堅持它是單數。 如果把 department 視為複數,務須小心:The Transport Department say they have new plans。 這一句沒有任何錯漏:say-they-have 都是複數用的字。 不過,不少人拿不定主意,徘徊於單複數之間,經常會這樣說:The Transport Department says they have new Plans。 這一句錯在 number 不貫徹:says(單)-they(複)- have(複)。 如果用 says,唯有這樣:The Transport Department says it has new plans。 The public(大眾)、the audience(聽眾)the crowd(羣眾),這些都是可單數可複數的名詞,即如: |
| 1. |
The public are concerned about AIDS。 |
| 2. |
The public is concerned about AIDS。 |
| 3. |
The audience were appreciative。 |
| 4. |
The audience was appreciative。 |
| 5. |
The crowd are happy。 |
| 6. |
The crowd is happy。 |
然而,有些時候非小心不可。試問,在這一句的空間應該用哪一個 possessive adjectivev 呢? The crowd rose to – feet。群眾站了起來。 如果把 crowd 當作單數,空間填上的便是 its; 如果以 crowd 為複數,就填 their。 我認為應該用 their feet,因為這才可以表達人多腳多的意思。its feet …… 難道一雙腳?有點兒怪誕。 |
THE NUMBER / A NUMBER [號碼/數字] 我們討論的字是 number,不是 numbers。換言之,談的是單數的字, number 經常可以這樣用 :The number of teachers _____ small。 如果用 present tense,空間應該填上 is 還是 are? 不要馬上回答。讓我們好好分析,趁機會練習思考。整句的意思看來是;「教師人數少」。small 的可不是教師,而是 number,此其一。 從結構看,片語 number,of teachers 是以 number of 為主的,此其二。 Number 是單數,所以要說:The number of teachers is small。 Number 的另一個用法是這樣的: 又先分析,後填充。 如果動詞用 present tense,形式應該是 perfect。所以,我們決定選 has 或 have。如果 number 為真正的 subject,動詞就要用 has,不過,「數目」怎可以辭職? 故此,a number of 不能按字面理解。
根據 Oxford 辭典,holiday 的第一個意思是「假日」 : a day of rest …… when no work is done; 第二個意思是「假期」:(英國)(often plural)period of time away from everyday work。 憑上述第一個意思的解釋,a holiday 是一天的假期,即假日,用法與普通可數名詞一樣:
Next monday is a holiday。 There are 17 bank holidays in 1993。(十七個假日)
第二個意思的 holiday 較難處理,須要用例說明。 |
| 1. |
學校的暑假為期數十天,可稱 summer holidays,但亦可當為一個時期(period)來說,故此可稱 summer holiday。這樣的 holiday 或 holidays,美國人稱為 vacation。 表示一次過的假期,無論多少天,vacation 都用單數。 |
如果說:「我一年享有二十個假日」,英語可說:I am entitled to 20 holidays a year。 另外一個說法是:I am entitled to 20 days’ holiday a year。 留意,20 holidays 以「日」為單元,故此holidays 是複數,但 20 days’ holiday,因有 days’ 一字表示日數,所以 holiday 用單數。 此外,尚要留意,英國人這樣用 holiday (s)通常不是說公眾假日。 說「三天假期」英語有兩個方法: |
| 1. |
a three – day holiday,以 three – day(沒有 S)做形容詞; |
| 2. |
three days’ holiday,留意沒有冠詞 a,days’ 有 apostrophe(所有格撇號)。 因為 days 是複數,撇號在 S 後, |
第一個方法,既然有冠詞 a,holiday 必然是單數; 第二個方法,日數由 days’ 表示,holiday 也是單數,取其「休息時間」之意。 以下數句,意思可算一樣:We’ll have a three-day holiday soon。 |
| 1. |
We’ll have three days’holiday soon。 |
| 2. |
We’ll have three days off soon。(請查 off) |
上述的三天是連著的。跟著的一句所的三個假日卻是分開的:We’ll have three holidays soon。 |
![]() | WATERS / SANDS[水/沙粒] |
這一講提出幾個名詞,略談它們單複數的有趣變化。 Water 是「水」,只有「量」而無「數」,故此沒有複數。 |
Waters 有兩個意思。 |
| 1. |
水域,例如:Chinese waters 中國水域,British waters 英國水域; |
| 2. |
大片的水,尤指海洋、湖泊、河流的水,例如:They sailed across the waters of the pacific(突出宏大、浩瀚之意。) |
Rain 是「雨」,點滴無數,所以沒有複數。例句: We haven’t had any rain for a long time。 Stay out of the rain。 不過,如果在 rain 前加了形容詞,我們可說 a heavy rain,a light rain,這等於中文的「一場大雨、一陣細雨」。 The rains 是特殊名詞,指的是熱帶地區的雨季,例句:In this forest, the rains come in September。 Snow 是「雪」,和「雨」一樣數無可數。例句: The children are playing in the snow。 They get a lot of snow in Canada。 如果說 snows,有兩個意思: |
| 1. |
雪季,例:The snows came early this year; |
| 2. |
強調很多雪,例:They were awed by the snows of the Alps。 |
Sand 是「沙」,本來不可數,無數沙粒統稱 sand。 不過,如果說及少灘或一處布滿了沙的地方,我們可用 sands,即如: The children are playing on the sand。或 The children are playing on the sands。 此外,我們也可以說:They travelled across the sands of the desert (突出綿綿沙漠之意。) Heaven 是「天堂、上帝、天」,是欲數無從的名詞,例:She says she’ll go to heaven when she dies;heaven help us! 雖然如此,日常感嘆語說的卻是 Heavens! Good Heavens!此外,the’ heavens 是 the sky(天空)的美化委婉語,例句: The rocket soared into the heavens。(火箭直上雲霄。) The heavens opened。(天降豪雨) |
REFORM / REFORMS [改革] 「我們在談政治改革,他們在談經濟改革。」 這句話英語怎樣說? 這樣說:we’re talking about political reform:they’re talking about economic reform。
Equipment[設備]。 | ![]() | |
Information[信息]。 | ![]()
Furniture[家具]。 | ![]() | |
Advice[建議]。 | ![]() | |
Happiness[幸福]。 | ![]() | |
Machinery[機械]。 | ![]() | |
Uncountable 的「泛義」名詞: Pleasure- I’m going to Toronto for pleasure。(歡樂之情) Busincss-I’m going to Toronto on busincss。(商業、事務) Damage-The flood caused widespread damage。(破壞) Countabte 的「具體」名詞: Pleasure-It’s a pleasure to meet you。(樂事) He enjoyed all the pleasures of life。(各種世俗樂趣) Business-A business cannot succeed without a good staff。(任何一門生意、一種經營) Mr Kwok is running 20 businesses at the same time。(各種生意) Damages 是複數名詞,只有法律意思:賠款。
![]() | ADJECTIVES IN COMPARISON
| 1. | Hot,hotter,hottest | |
| 2. | Cold,colder,coldest | |
| 3. | Easy,easier,easiest | |
| 4. | Happy,happier,happiest | |
| 5. | Nice,nicer,nicest | |
| 6. | Long,longer,longest | |
| 7. | Pretty,prettier,prettiest | |
| 8. | Bitter,bitterer,bitterest | |
每用最高級等級形容詞,必需(definite article)the: This is the easiest question in the test。 This is the most difficult question in the test。 在香港常見的錯誤是用雙重比較詞(double comparative)例子如下:
| 1. | This question is more easier than that one。 | |
| 2. | Your car is more better than mine。 | |
因為 easier 和 better 都已表示「比較」,more 就不可用。若要強調或加進「很多」的意思,唯有加用 Much:
| 1. | This question is much easier than that one。 | |
| 2. | Your car is much better than mine。 | |
這一講列舉的是基本語法規定,不難明明。跟著數講所提出的問題比較複雜。
ABLER/MORE ABLE 之前說到形容詞變化,有這兩句:「大致有這樣的一些規定」和「多數兩個音節的有規則形容詞 …… 加 er …… est」。為什麼用「大致」和「多數」這樣不肯定的詞語呢?原因是,有些形容詞頗特別,不能一概而論。 Afraid,比較時只用 more afraid,most afraid。 由動詞加 ing 而成(即本來是 present participle)的形容詞,例如 charming 和 pleasing,雖然只有兩個音節,亦只可用 more 及 most 作比較。 由名詞加 ful 而成的形容詞,例如 careful 及 frightful,又只有兩個音節,但比較時非用 more 及 most 不可。 Unhappy 和 untidy,明明有三個音節,變化時卻用 unhappier,untidier,unhappiest,untidiest。 此外,更有些形容詞既可加 er/st,也可用 more/most。 例如︰ Able-abler 或 more,able,ablest 或 most able Empty-emptier 或 more empty,emptiest 或 most empty Kind-kinder 或 more kind,kindest 或 most kind 那麼,我們如何是好呢? 答案是:凡有疑問,最好查個究竟。如果沒有機會查究,用 more 和 most 是較為保險的方法。無論用什麼比較方法,總之不能用double comparative 及 double superlative:
| 1. | This book is much better than that。 | |
| 2. | English is more easier to learn than Chinese。 | |
| 3. | Mr Li is the most wealthiest man in Hong Kong。 | |
MORE IMPORTANT [更重要的] 這裹是三個談年輕人的句子,只求表達,觀念正確與否並不重要。 Young people need to be educated。 Young people need to be loved。 To be loved is more important than to be educated。 [三句合一]:Young people need to be educated, and, more important, they need to be loved。 用 more important 是正宗語法。原本應該是插語 what is more important,把 what is 省去便成。 用 more importantly 是新興語法,盛行北美,而且蔓延至英國。 這個詞語的理論根據是,它屬 adverb(副詞),修飾動詞 need,故此 important 應該加上 ly。 必須指出,還有一些語言專家不願接受新興的一個詞語。他們認鄰 more importantly 是說不通的。 對我們對來說,選擇有三:
| 1. | Young people need to be educated, and,more important,they need to be loved。 | |
| 2. | Young people need to be educated,and,what is more important,they need to be loved。 | |
| 3. | Young people need to be educated,and,more importantly,they need to be loved。 | |
上文提到插語,英文是 parenthesis,用複數就把後邊的 is 化為 es。 一個插語在結構上是脫離了它插進的句子的,作用是加插一些突然想起的事,必以標點分隔,可用 commas,可用 brackets 亦可用 dashes。例: The number is-now listen very carefully- 1234。原來的一句是 the number is 1234,now listen carefully 是即興加進去的。
FIRST OR FIRSTLY? 為了解釋一件事,我們很多時用上列方法:第 一 ……,第二 ……,第三 …… 等。 中文的「第」字當然可省略。英文怎樣呢? |
| 1. |
First …… second …… third |
| 2. |
First …… secondly …… thirdly |
| 3. |
Firstly …… secondly …… thirdly |
哪一個組合才對呢?全部都對。 用 first,second,third,理論根據是三個字都是 determiners(辭典以 det 代表),作用等於形容詞,亦等於簡化了的 the first point,the second point,the third point。 |
LASTLY[最後] 講開 first,second,third,當然要說數到最後的 last。不過,先提出 last 這個字可能引起的誤會。 Last 作形容詞,有兩個意思,其一是「最近」,其二是「最後」。那麼,his last book 用的是哪一個意思? 是「他最近的著作」 ?還是「他最後的著作」?沒有答案。 用 last 為形容詞,唯有從前文後語去理解。所以,為免混淆,最好這樣:以 his latest book 表示「最近的著作」,用 his final book 表示「最後的著作」。 說列舉怯了。既然可說 first,second,third,last 當然可以相配。不過,如果說 firstly,secondly,thirdly,就應該用 lastly 壓尾。 Lastly 表示的「最後一點」這個意思,可以用 finally 代替。我們收看英語電視的新聞報告,經常聽見報告員在報告完新聞後,略說天氣。因為天氣是最後一項報告,所以報告員說:and lastly,the weather 或 and finally,the weather。 |
THAN I?THAN ME? | ||
| 1. | He’s taller than I。 | |
| 2. | He’s taller than I。 | |
哪一句是正確的?用詔怯分析,這樣的一句在結構土有兩部分,前一部分是 he’s taller,後一部分是 than I’m tall,than 是 Conjunction(連接詞)。 最後的 tall 從來不用,於是, he’s taller than I,he’s taller than I am 兩句都正確。 留意,沒有 tall 壓尾,不可用 I’m 收句,一定要用 I am。 學生們如果不慣用 I,he,she,we,they 等字收句,最好按所需加用 am,is 或 are。 知所選擇後,尚要知道西人經常說 he’s taller than me。用 me 是錯的,但日常是可以接受的。
| 1. | He likes you more than I。 | |
| 2. | He likes you more than me。 | |
哪一句正確呢?兩句都正確,它們說的根本是不同的事。 第一句原本是 he likes you more than I like you。 這一句可以照用,但通常略為簡化成 he likes you more than I 或 he likes you more than I do。(用 do 來避免重複 like。)中譯「他比較我喜歡你多一些。」 第二句原本是 he likes you more than he likes me。這一句亦可照用 但通常簡化為 he likes you more than me。中譯「他喜歡你多過(他喜歡)我」。 第一組例句說的是兩方面的事,雖語法犯錯也不致意錯。第二組例句說三方面的事,不容偏差 否則意思可能相去甚遠。
