||
| 1. |
I’m going to the hairdresser’s。 |
![]() |
| 2. |
She’s going to the grocer’s。 |
![]() |
| 3. |
I’m having dinner at my uncle’s tomorrow。 |

| 4. |
He’s at the dentist’s。 |
![]() |
| 5. |
They go to St. Andrew’s every Sunday。 |
|
| 6. |
Hairdresser’s = hairdresser’s salon。 |
|
| 7. |
Grocer’s = grocer’s shop。 |
|
| 8. |
My uncle’s = my uncle’s flat or house or place or home。 |
|
| 9. |
The dentist’s = the dentist’s clinic。 |
|
| 10. |
St. Andrew’s = St. Andrew’s church。 |
|
|
說 at my uncle,at the dentist,St. |
||
說 going to the hairdresser 及 going to the grocer,意見是「那人會去」,但無「理髮」及「購物」的意思。 He put his arm through his sister’s。 I’ve seen his work,but not yours。 Sister’s = sister’s arm Your = your work 請想想,如果說 he put his arm through his sister,有什麼不對勁呢? He put his arm through his sister,意思可恐怖得很! |
A FRIEND OF MINE[我的其中一個朋友] 假設 John 與你為友。 John is a friend of mine。 如果 John 是你「爸爸的朋友」你可用英語說 he’s my father’s friend,如果你要說 John 是「爸爸的一個朋友」,你便用英語說:he’s a friend of my father’s。 |
|
||
| 1. |
I’m a friend of Mr Wong’s。 |
|
| 2. |
I’m a friend of John’s。 |
|
| 3. |
They are friends of my mother’s。 |
|
|
||
| 1. |
a friend of mine 差不多等於 one of my friends。 說差不多,是因為 one of my friends 指明必然有些朋友,而 a friend of mine 卻是有「只得一個朋友」的可能的。 在介紹我的一個小說時,我可說:this is one of my novels,也可說:this is a novel of mine。
1. He is a citizen of the United Kingdom。 2. They are friends of the earth。 |
|
DO/DONE 語法中有代名詞(pronouns), 即如 he、 him、 it。 Will you tell him about it? (太簡) Yes,I will。(標準) Yes,I will tell him about it。(太繁) Yes,I will do so。 最後一句中的 do so 等於 tell him about it,所以就是代語。 |
|
||
| 1. |
Do you mind me sitting here? |
|
| 2. |
Do you mind him sitting here? |
|

|
| 1. | Do you go swimming every day? 答:I used to. I used to do so。 | |
| 2. | Do you think they will agree? 答:They might,They might do so。
Has he finished yet? | |
| 答: | He should have。 He should have done so。 He should have done。 He might have。 He might have done so。 He might have done。 | |
| 1. | 不可說 he should。 | |
| 2. | Done so 代替了 finished。 | |
| 3. | He should have done 及 he might have done 是典型英國習慣。 | |
Do YOU MIND …… Do you mind waiting? Do you mind him sitting here? Do you mind if I sit here? If I sit here 稱為名稱子句(noun clause),是 mind 的受詞(object)。 Sitting 既然是名詞,前面用的應該是所有格 (possessive case),即如: my car,my book。 根據這法則,我們可說 : Do you mind his sitting here? Do you mind their sitting hem? Do you mind our sitting here? His、their 和 our 都屬所有格。 |
| 1. | Do you mind me sitting here? | |
| 2. | Do you mind him sitting here? | |
難道我們可說 me car,him book? I don’t like Jane’s cooking。 I don’t like Jane cooking。
| 1. | He doesn’t like mary’s typing。 | |
| 2. | He doesn’t like mary typing。 | |
TO YOUR HEART’S CONTENT Do you mind waiting? Do you mind him sitting here? Do you mind if I sit here? If I sit here 稱為名稱子句(noun clause),是 mind 的受詞(object)。 Sitting 既然是名詞,前面用的應該是所有格 (possessive case),即如:my car, my book。 根據這法則,我們可說 : Do you mind his sitting here? Do you mind their sitting hem? Do you mind our sitting here? His、their 和 our 都屬所有格。 表示「所屬」的一格稱為「所有格」,即 possessive 或 genitive case,例如 this book is mine 中的 mine,this is John’s book 中的 John’s。 表示「所屬」的另一個方是用 preposition of’,即如 One minute of English。 John’s 及 minute’s 中的 ’s 稱為 apostrophe 加 S。習慣上,表示「分量 – measurement and quantity」、「時問 – time」及「space – 空間」,都可以用 apostrophe 這個方法,例如: Two day’s wages 兩天的工資(因 days 是複數,本來應該有 s,故一撇放在 s 後。) A year’s absence。 Yesterday’s news。 A hair’s breadth。
| 1. | The wages of two days。 | |
| 2. | An absence of a year。 | |
| 3. | News of yesterday。 | |
| 4. | The breadth of a hair。 | |
You may eat to your heart’s content。 In my mind’s eye,I can still see my grandmother。 My heart’s content 不能改為 content of my heart;my mind’s eye 也不能改認 eye of my mind。
THE TIME V. TIME[時間] The 是 definite article 中譯「定冠詞」。
I haven’t got time?或 I haven’t got the time? I haven’t got money?或 I haven’t got the money? I haven’t got money。 I haven’t got time。 I haven’t got the money。 = I haven’t got the money for the new car。 I haven’t got the time。 = I haven’t got the time for singing。 The money 為某事而花的錢;the time 是指明為某事而花的時問。 I haven’t got the patience to learn languages。
THE SECRETARY AND ACCOUNTANT[秘書兼會計] 先談談冠詞 a(an)及 the。 你問某人做什麼工作,他說:I am a secretary(我是做秘書的)。 他說:I am a secretary。 The secretary and accountant of the company is present。 The secretary and the accountant of the company are present。 And 是 co-ordinate conjunction(對等連接詞)。 |
I WISH YOU WOULD[我希望你能]
We would be grateful if you would(或 could)give us a sample。 We will be grateful if you will give us a sample。 留意:would be gratcful 配 would give,will he grateful 配 will give,不可混亂。
| 1. | His brothers and sisters are here。 | |
| 2. | His brother. and sister are here。 | |
His brother and sister are here。 此外,brother(不知兄或弟)及 sister(不知姊或妹)並不等於「兄弟姊妹」,於是並不能當作統稱。 His brother and his sister are here.His brother 對 his sister,這就是對稱。
「他的父母」,英語應該是 his father and his mother 或 his mum and his dad(習慣放 mum 在前)。 這麼一來,說 his father and mother 或 his mum and dad 是可以接受的。
She is my wife and friend,中譯是「她是我的妻子,也是我的朋友。」 My wife and my friend will be here soon。 My wife and her friend will be here soon。 | |
說英語,我們也必須這樣:a man,a woman and a child,沒有一個 a 可省。 | |
| 1. | I like apples。 | |
| 2. | I like John。 | |
| 3. | I like it。 | |
| 4. | I like them。 | |
I like to swim。 此外,我們還可說 I like swimming。 動詞 look 是不及物動詞,不能直接帶着受詞, 即如 I look 可以成句,但 I look you 則語法錯了。 Look 與 you 之間必需介詞(preposition)at,說成 I look at you,中譯「我看着你。」 Look 與 preposition 形成很多組合(phrasal verb),即如 look into a problem 是「調查問題」,look down on someone 是「輕視某人」,look for something 是「找尋」。 介詞後必是名詞類,因此我們可以說 he is looking forward to a promotion,意思是「他有望晉級」。 I look forward to meeting you。
| 1. | He was accused of stealing。 | |
| 2. | He is dedicated to helping people in need。 | |
如 write,可以說 write a book; 又如 speak,可以說 speak English。 化為被動語態(passive voice)時,以受詞當主詞(subject)便可 : A book is written。 English is spoken。 如 sleep 不可說 sleep a bed,只能說 sleep in a bed; 又如 die,不可說 die someone,只能說 someone dies。 第一個例中,a bed 是介置(preposition) in 的受詞,in 界定了 sleep 和 a bed 的關係。 He will officiate the ceremony。(主動語態) The ceremony will be officiated by him。 He will officiate at the ceremony。 In memory of a XXX ceremony officiated by his excellency the Chief Executive。 You are invited to a ceremony which will be officiated by XXX。 |
ONTO/ON TO[到…之上] On to,兩個字,onto,一個字。 He went on to succeed。 Went on 是一組,to succeed 是一組(infinitive),如果是這樣的情況,on to 應該是兩個字。 例句:They fought on to defeat the enemy。 They walked on to look for water。 留意;fought 是「戰」,fought on 是「繼續戰」walked 是「走」,walked on 是「繼續走」。 They jumped。 They jumped into the pool。 Into 是介詞(preposition) , 等於 to a position in。 They jumped on to the platform。 They jumped onto the platform。 反之,on 跟後的 to the platform 卻是一組,意思是「到台上去」。 On to 等於 to a position on,與 into 的語法作用完全一樣。 He climbed onto the roof。 He went on to fame and fortune。 這一句中,went on 是一組,to fame and fortune 是一組,所以 on to 最好分為兩個字。 說出來,在 he went on 後可以稍頓。 He climbed onto the roof。 這一句中的 onto,好比 into,是介詞,onto the roof 是一組。 我們不宜寫 he climbed on to the roof,也不應在 on 後稍頓,因為 on to 和稍頓都會使人誤會︰「他繼續爬,爬到天台」Onto 在日常語中有兩個相當特別的意思。
| 1. | You are onto a good thing。 | |
| 2. | The police are onto him for smuggling。 | |
MAY / MIGHT [也許可能] May 及 might,正如 can 與 could,是輔助動詞。 它們表示 possibility(可能),亦表示 permission(允許)。 They say(that)they may not come。 這句中的 they say 是主要子句(main clause),動詞 say 是現在式,(that)they may not come 是名詞子句(noun clause),是 say 的內容,故此是 say 的object,動詞 may not come 是現在式。 They said(that)they might not come。 The police say(that)twenty people may have drowned。 The police said(that)twenty people might have drowned。
| 1. | He told me(that)he would help me。 | |
| 2. | They confessed(that)they had stolen the money。 | |
Would 不能用 will 代替,had stolen 也不能用 have stolen 代替。 They said they may not come。 The police said twenty people may have drowned。
MAY I/MIGHT I[我可以 …… 用 can 代 may 來表示 permission(允許)或 request(要求)是語法演變的一個好例證。 以前,說 can I sit down 算是 bad English,要說 may I sit down 才算正確,且看 Oxford 及 Longman 的註釋。 Oxford:British speakers normally use ‘ can ‘ to give or request permission …… ‘ may ‘ is formal。 Longman:Except in formal writing,‘can’ is now more common than ‘may’ to express permission。 你向我提出一個意見,我認為你可能是對的,說:You may be right.但亦可說:You might be right。比較起來,用 may 表示的 possibility(可能)是大一點的。
| 1. | May I ask you a favour? | |
| 2. | Might I ask you a favour? | |
| 3. | May I have your attention,please? | |
| 4. | Might I have your attention,please? | |
May I make a suggestion? Might I make a suggestion?
EVERYBODY …… HE OR SHE[所有人 …… Everybody should mind his own business。 Everybody should mind his or her own business。 |
說 his or her,he or she,可不是理想辦法,因為:
| 2. | 為什麼不說 her or his,she or he? | |
曾有些「好心人」提倡用 per 代 he or she(per 是 person 的第一節),用 herm 代 him or her,可惜,he,she,him,her 都是根深蒂固的字,所以「好心人」的革命失敗了。 Everybody should mind their own business。
| 1. | All of us should mind our own business。 | |
| 2. | All of you should mind your own business。 | |
