Correlative conjunction
John’s father is a lawyer。
語法上,這稱為 Symbol sentence。simple 的意思是,舉中指有一個 Subject 及一個 verb。
John’s father who is in Beijing,is a lawyer。
這一句的主要訊息仍然是「John 的父親是律師」。比起第一句,他多了些次要內容,那就是介紹了 John 的父親身在何處。
Who is in Beijing 前後都有一個 Comma,稱為 Non-restrictive clause,中譯「非限制子句」。
非限制的意思是,John‘s father 是誰並不靠這子句來辨別。換言之,John’s father 只有一個人,無論他身在何方都是同一個人。
Who is in Beijing 等於 Extra information(額外資料),它不是主要訊息(Main message )。
John’s father who is in Beijing is a lawyer。
這一句子的子句 who is in Beijing 前後都沒有 comma,語法雖不能說是錯,意思卻奇怪得很。
沒有 comma 在前後的應用詞子句稱為「限制子句」,英文是 Restrictive clause。限制的意思是,John’s father 是誰要靠子句來辨別(identify)。
換言之,John 有多過一個父親,最終所提的是他身在北京的那個父親!
根據正統語法,John’s father,who is in Beijing,is a lawyer 這一句,Who is in Beijing 前後的 commas 都是必須的。
兩個 commas 都不用,意思固然怪誕,有前無後或有後無前亦都不正確。
John’s father,who is in Beijing,he‘s a lawyer。
句中的形容詞子句是 Non-restrictive 的,用於文章,前後都要逗號 ;用於口語,“,“ 逗號示意稍頓,而且子句說來可有「附帶一提」或插語的語氣。
John‘s father who is in Beijing is a lawyer。
這一句中的形容詞子句是 restrictive 的,前後沒有逗號,所以,用於口語,John’s father who is in Beijing 應該一口氣說完,可供稍頓的地方是 Beijing 後。
由此可知,標點符號不但是寫文章要服從的語法,說話一樣要遵守。
The President of the United States, who is in Tokyo, will be going to Paris next week。

I saw a car parked there。 I saw a car parking there。 兩句唯一的分別是 parked / parking。 Park 在句中是及物動詞,語態(voice)可用主動(active)或被動(passive)。Parked 是過去分詞(past participle),是被動的;parking 是現在分詞(present participle),是主動的。 Parked there 及 parking there 都是片語(phrases)都形容 a car。不用片語,可用子句 I saw a car which was parked there。 I saw a car which was parking there。 Was parked 是被動的,was parking 則是主動的。 在語法形式上,兩句都對,然而在用法(usage)上,第二句是說不通的,因為 car 是所謂「死物」,沒有生命,沒有主宰,所以不能自動停放。換言之,用 parking there 或 which was parking there 來形容 a car,錯了。結論,只可說: I saw a car parked there。 我看見一部車停放在那邊。 如果要說的是「我看見有人正將一部車停放在那邊」,就是說「停放的行動正在進行」,英文要這樣寫: I saw a car which was being parked there。 Was being parkcd 是被動語態的過去進行式動詞。把子句化為片語。 I saw a car being parked there(by someone)。停放汽車的當然是人。用被動語態的好處就是 by someone 可以省掉。不過,我們也經常會用主動語態這樣說: I saw someone park a car there。 I saw someone parking a car there。 選擇要按意思而定。 |

I’D LIKE MY EGGS FRIED 這講提出的句子結構是:Subject + verb + object + past participle 你在餐廳要吃早餐,叫一份「火腿蛋」。 侍應問:How would you like your eggs?「你要雞蛋怎樣造法?」留意,一份「火腿蛋」通常有兩三隻雞蛋,所以用複數的 eggs;如果只要一雙雞蛋,當然要用單數的 egg。 回答侍應,你可說:I’d like my eggs fried。(subject 是 I,verb 是 would like,object 是 my eggs,past participle 是 fried。) I prefer my eggs fried。 三句的意思都是:「我要煎蛋。」原則上,fried 前可加 to be,即如 I want my eggs to be fried,但 to be 屬於多餘,不用為佳。 假如你的汽車一度壞了,你親自把它修理好,你當然可以自豪地說:I fixed my car。 不過,如果你是叫人替你修理汽車的,你就要說: I had my car fixed。 I got my car fixed。 fixed 前絕不能加 to be。 有幾個遊客把財物亂放,結果發現不見了錢:They found their money stolen。 他們發現錢給人偷去了。這一句的意思,完全等於:They found that their money had been stolen。 比較起來,當然以原來的一句簡潔得多。 |
DO YOU MIND WAITING? 用英語表示「我喜歡游泳」,以 like 為動詞,可說 I like to swim,亦可說 I like swimming,意思可算相同。 To swim 是 infinitive, swimming 是 gerund(動名詞),兩者都發揮名詞的作用,是及物動詞 like 的 object。 如果以 enjoy 為動詞,句子結構就沒有選擇了,只能用這方式:subject + verb + gerund,即如: I enjoy swimming。 I enjoy reading。 I enjoy reading novels。 Avoid, consider, mind,跟 enjoy 一樣不能用 infinitive 作 object。 錯: He avoids to talk about politics。 He considered to give up his job。 Do you mind to wait a minute? 這三句全錯了, 必須這樣才對: 對: He avoids talking about politics。 他避談政治。 He considered giving up his job。 他考慮放棄他的工作。 Do you mind waiting a minute? 你會否介意稍等? 動詞 mind 後不能用 infinitive,這一點本來是所有中五學生都應該知道的,但據我觀察,犯錯的人實在很多。未知原因何在。 有些動詞在用法上表面與 like 一樣,後面可用 infinitive,亦可用 gerund,可是表達的卻是不同的意思。就以 try 及 stop 為例: 一,Have you ever tried doing voluntary work? 你試過做義工嗎? Please try to do some voluntary work。 請你做些義工吧。 Try doing = 試試看 Try to do = make an attempt = 努力而為 二,When the teacher arrived, the students stopped talking。 教師來到的時候,學生們停止談話。 On his way out, the teacher stopped to talk to me。 教師出去的時候,停下來跟我說話。 Stop doing = 停止做 Stop to do = 停下來,因為要做某些事 |

IT’S ME。THIS IS HE。 It’s me,It’s him,It’s her ……。 這些語法表面不當的句子,不但口語應該用,見諸文字亦可,但組織較長句子時則要小心。 I pay the bills。 這 一 句 用 的 是 最 基 本 的 結 構:subject + verb + object。 若要強調說「是我、不是別人、結賬」,可用這種 It’s me who pays the bills。 留意 pays 是有 s 的,因為 me 當作第三身單數,It’s me 可用,用 it’s I 當然可以。 It’s I who pay the bills。 留意 pay 不能有 s。 It’s me 可用,this is me 亦自然沒有不妥。假設在看照片時,指著某照片中的一個人說:「這就是我」,英語是 this is me, 不說 this is I。 好了,現在細心聽聽一種特別情況。 你是黃先生。現在接聽電話,對方說:「Can I speak to Mr Wong,please?」 根據香港大多數人的習慣,你可應一句 speaking。沒有錯,但不能自滿。很多西人會應一句 this is he。 當然,如果不是 Mr Wong 而是 Miss Wong,應的一句就是 this is she。 語法出奇地正確,不用 him 或 her。 進一步想想,用 this is me 是說不通的。用本地話,我們可說:「我就是他」。說「這就是我」就不知所謂了。 |
WHERE’S YOUR MANNERS? 小孩無禮,在旁的家長可能即時教訓。常用的一句英語是 “ where’s your manners?“ 語法如何?無可否認錯了。 manners 是複數,因此動詞應該是 are。 一絲不苟的家長深明此理,多數說 where’re your manners,但不少家長因為沒有示範語言的意識,都明知故犯地用 where’s,原因是它比較「順口」。「順口」往往就是錯誤積習的主因。 There is,there are 是一種句子結構的開端。其實中文也有相若的結構,那就是「那裹有 ……」。 如果說 an apple is there,two apples are there,本來文意是清楚的,可是句子結構公認生硬之極。 慣用的是倒裝句,先用 there,等於中文的「那裹」,跟著按所說的東西的數目而選動詞,即如: There’s an apple。 There’re two apples。
John and Peter are here,把 John 放在 Peter 前邊無非因為在文字及口語中說兩個人都一定要有先後。 如果說:Peter and John are here,絕無不可。不過,根據人之常情,我們通常都自覺地把輩分較高的人放在第一位。 有時為了禮貌,又自覺地把自己放在末位;Peter,John and I are here。 John 是單數,Peter 又是單數,但 John and Peter,等於 John 加 Peter,兩單成雙,所以是複數,動詞用 are。 John is here 對。John and his wife are here 又對。 這一句如何呢?John with his wife is here。這一句是對的,因為主詞只得 John 一個人,with 是介詞而不是連接詞。 如果把句子稍改,就會清楚:John is here with his wife。 翻譯時,我認為不應輕率,應該把 John and his wife are here 譯為:John 和他太太在這裹」,把 John is here with his wife 譯為:John 偕同他太太在這裹」。「偕同」一語,有主次分別之意。 With 是介詞,as well as 也是介詞,等於 in addition to。 John as well as his wife is here。 這一句的主詞是單數的 John,所以動詞是 is。把倒句譯為中文,應該是:「不但他太太在這裹,John 也在這裹。」 總之,and, with,as well as 並不是同類同義的, 不能全翮譯為「和、同、與、及」。 |

BETWEEN /AMONG 比較兩句: There is disagreement between them。 There is disagreement among them。 根據一般人記著的簡單規則,用 between 表示兩者之間的關係,用 among 表示多過兩者之間的關係, 因此第一句的 them 是說兩個人或兩方面,而第二句的 them 則說三個人或三方面。 不過,這種想法是過分簡單的,應該修正。先引述 Oxford 的解釋: ’ Among ’ is used of people or things considered as a group。 ’ Between ’ is used of people or things, either two in number or more than two considered individually。 根據以上解釋,among 不但用來表示多過兩者之間的關係,更重要的是它表達了「在其中」的意思。說多少人或多少事都不重要,因為即使人或物的數目超過兩個,都算為一體。 例句: He stood among the crowd(of people)。 They talked among themselves。 There is a thief among you(people)。 There is a house among the trees。 She divided the money among her three children。 Between 不但表達甲與乙的關係,更可表達甲、 乙、丙不同個體之間的關係,這就是很多人忽略的一點。 例句: A treaty was signed between the United States of America, the United Kingdom and France。 The school is situated between a hospital,a department store and a football field。 She divided the money between her two children。 比較: ’ A ’country is situated among three countries。 ’ A ’ country is situated between ’B ’ country,’ C ’ country and ’ D ’ country。 第一句可用 between。第二句說出三國的名詞,以用 between 偽佳。 Between 還有「合力」的意思,與人或物的數目無關。 例句: The workers raised one million dollars between them。 John,David and Peter finished the job between them。 John and Peter finished the job between them。 |
CORRELATIVE CONJUNCTLONS Correlative conjunction 中譯「關連詞」,作用是連接。兩個典型的例是:either / or,neither / nor。 首先記著,說 either / nor 或 neither / or 都是錯的。 用 correlative conjunctions,必須留意 symmetry (對稱)。這一點要詳細解釋。以一個例句開始:You must come on Wednesday。這一句表示沒有選擇。 You must come either on Wednesday or on Saturday。 這一句表示了選擇的可能。 留意 either 後是 on Wednesday,語法上是一個以 preposition 開始的 adverbial phrase,or 後是 on Saturday,語法上與 on Wednesday 相同,這就是對稱。 如果說:You must come either on Wednesday or Saturday,因為 Saturday 少了 on在前面,立即不對稱,語法算錯。可能有些人認為省去 on Saturday 的 on,是合乎簡潔原則的,但這只不過是想當然的看法。 請多參考一些例句,看通 symmetry 的道理: You must come on either Wednesday or Saturday。 He is either a hypocrite or a fool。 This car belongs to either your brother or your sister。 Neither playing games nor singing songs will help you pass the exam。 最後一句要特別一談。playing 是 gerund(動名詞)。如果說 neither playing games nor songs, playing 與 songs 不對稱,故此在 nor 後亦用 gerund ‘singing‘。 當然,我們可說:Neither games nor songs will help you pass the exam。 |
|
EITHER YOU OR I Grammatical symmetry 不是易於明白的,不妨多看幾個例: 一. Neither his father nor mother is ill。 此句應改為:Neither his father nor his mother is ill。 二. He is either a lawyer or doctor、 此句應改為:He is either a lawyer or a doctor。 三. Cruz is either cheered by the spectators or he is booed by them。 此句應改為:Cruz is either cheered by the spectators or booed by them。 Cruz either is cheered by the spectators or is booed by them。 Either Cruz is cheered by the spectators or he is booed by them。 以第一句最佳。 用 either / or 及 neither / nor 還有一個常見的難題:Either you or I …… responsible。 如果這句改馮:Either you are responsible or I am responsible,就沒有空格填上什麼這問題。不過,為了簡潔,難題不得不解決。 Either you or I,說的是兩人中的一人,所以是單數。 解決難題的準則是以近動詞的 subject 作主,這就是說,因為 I 近動詞,所以動詞用 am:Either you or I am responsible。 如果說 either you or he,動詞就用 is(present tense);如果說。Either he or you,動詞就用 are(present tense)。 |
|
BUT ALTHOUGH 「雖」與「但」是中文句子結構常用的關連詞。「雖」的英文是 although,「但」的英文是 but,為什麼不能作關連詞? 英文的 simple sentence,說的並不是意思簡單的句子,而是這句中只有一個有時態限制的動詞(finite verb)。 He is happy,只有 is 一個動詞,就是simple sentence。 無論句子如何複雜,子句(clauses)怎樣多,當中都必然有一個基本的 simple sentence,稱為 main clause,主要子句。 在主要子句外加附屬子句(subordinate clauses)及對等子句(co-ordinate clauses),必需連接詞(conjunction)。 比方在 he is happy 外加 he is poor,我們可按意思所需要選擇 Although 為連接詞:He is happy although he is poor。把結構稍改: Although he is poor,he is happy。 如果說:Although he is poor,but he is happy,語法錯了,因為 although he is poor 是附屬子句,but he is happy 是對等子句,那麼主要子句在哪裹? 為了保留兩者之一為主要子句,我們可按意思重點而選擇說: Although he is poor,he is happy。 He is poor but he is happy。 He has lost all his money。 But although he is poor,he is happy。 But 是與上一句的意思銜接的助語詞。But 與 although 於是並列。 我們也常讀到這樣的語句,完全正確: AIthough he is poor、he is happy,but very few people understand why。 在這一句中,he is happy 沒有連接詞開始,稱為 主要子句。 Although 與 but 各有所屬。 Although 和 but 不能在同一句中出現」,這是錯誤的想法。 |
I SAW HIM COME / COMING IN 以 see,hear,watch 為動與造句,給構用這公式:suhject + verb + object + 沒有 to 的 infiaitive。 I saw him come in。 I heard him come in。 I watched him come in。 現在用這公式:subject + verb + object + present pariciple。 I saw him coming in。 I heard him coming in。 I watched him coming in。 兩組句子,在意思上有什麼不同?Saw 或 heand 或 watched him come in,說的是整個進來的行動;saw 或 heard 或 watchcd him coming in,則把重點放在某人正在進來的時候。再看一個例來比較: I saw him cross the road。 我看到他過馬路(= 看到他由一邊過到另一邊。) I saw him crossing the road。 我看到他在過馬路。(= 看到他時,他正在過馬路。) Subject + verb + present participle 是常用的結構,以下三個都是日常語句: I caught him napping。 我捉到他在打吨。 I could smell something burning。 我嗅到一些東西在燃燒。 He kept me waiting。 他要我等著。 中文的「在」及「著」可與英文動詞的進行式等同。 |
THERE’S / THERE’RE There 後用什麼動詞,應該由後面的名詞而定。 There’s an apple,但 there’re two apples。 There’s a lot of people in the room。 There’s four books on the desk。 用 there are 來配合 people 和 books。 There’s bread and butter on the table。 這一句是正確的。雖然 bread and butter 聰來是兩件事,但在生活上它們是理應合一的東西,所以當單數。在口語上,bread and butter 必須一口氣說。 There’s a boy …… two men …… and three women。 論語法,此句說六個人,無可否認應該用there are。唯一情有可原之處可從句中的標點「……」看到。 這標點說明說話者是邊說邊想的。他開始時根本沒有準 備提及 two men and three women。不過,寫文章時就不容犯此毛病了。 |
HOLD TIGHT ! tight? tightly?怎樣決定呢?Sit tight「坐穩、不要動」和 hold tight「抓緊、扶穩」同屬 idiomatic,因此不應把 tight 改為 tightly。學習 idiomatic expressions,方怯只有一個:多閱讀、多和西人談話。 如果是不含習慣詞語的語句,即如 he shut the window tight(ly); she held her handbag tight(ly)in her arms,tight 或 tightly 可任擇其一。 語法觀念保守的人必 然認為 tightly 才正確。對不起,「保守」並不是好的形容詞,因為場合有 formal 與 informal 之分,我們措詞必然按場合所需而定。 從以下例子可以看到「執著」與「隨便」的雅俗分別:
Loud 與 loudly 要特別一談。比方說: Don’t talk so loud(ly)。(不要這樣大聲談話)Loud 與 Loudly 同屬副詞,意思一樣,但 Loudly 是 formal 的,而且經常有「喧嘩」的意思。 如果說:「他們高聲抗議」,英語應該說:They protested loudly。 Loud 只是「提高音量」,並沒有「吵鬧」的含意。 留意,loud and clear「清清楚楚」是習慣語,雖然 loudly and clearly 都說得過,但可惜有違習慣,使人聽來覺得彆扭。例句: Say your name loud and clear。 I hear you loud and clear。 She told him loud and clear that she was leaving。 | ||||||||||||||
